Bladen County in North Carolina purchased areverse 911 service integrated with a geographic information systemto target areas simply by choosing a street or drawing a circlearound a portion of a county map. Initially,the database was filledonly with the landline numbers of residents. Residents can alsoenter unlisted phone numbers, cell phone numbers, and secondarynumbers into the system for future contact.Police in Virginia Beachdefended the use of a reverse 911 call system to wake over 17,000residents at 3:20 am. The police used the system to send anautomated message to alert people that they were searching for amissing 12-year-old-girl. The police decided to take this measureonly after they had searched unsuccessfully for three hours usingK-9’s, helicopters, and foot patrols, and were unable to find thegirl with her friends or through social media or her cellphone.”
