Step 1: Submit a post to at least one of the topics below by 11:59 pm on Thursday. You will receive a grade for your post, and each post must have a minimum of 100 words. Please proofread your discussion post before submitting it to the board.
TOPICS:
- Although soil erosion is a natural process, it is also a big concern for many areas around the world as human activity has greatly accelerated the erosion process. Discuss why soil is an important resource. Can you find a location that has encountered a problem with soil erosion? How is this hurting the local population? What are people doing to help combat the problem? The link below provides an extreme example of soil-related problems faced by some areas: http://www.ncsu.edu/project/cnrint/Agro/PDFfiles/HaitiCaseStudy041903.pdf
- Some of the most famous landforms that we see as examples are the result of weathering and erosion processes. The Grand Canyon, Monument Valley (in Arizona), Carlsbad Caverns … just to name a few. Pick a landform and discuss how these processes have contributed to its dramatic appearance.
- Energy resources…we can’t live without them! Naturally forming sources of energy (including oil, natural gas, and coal) are discussed in Chapter 12 of the textbook. Coal is actually classified as a sedimentary rock, based on the way that it forms; and other resources, such as oil and natural gas, occur as deposits within sedimentary rocks beneath the Earth’s surface. We are bombarded on a daily basis with negative and positive information about these resources.
- How long supplies of these resources will last is a big concern for people around the world. There is a push for the development of renewable resources, but are we running out of time? Do you think that we will eventually use up the energy resources that we do have?
- Another concern is the burning of coal and oil (as gas). How is this affecting our environment? What types of problems are encountered with the extraction of these resources?
- If you think about it, South Carolina has many different types of depositional sedimentary environments. Name one type and describe the sedimentary rock or type of sediment that is found. Also, describe any other types of sedimentary rocks that might eventually result within that particular depositional environment. (Consider inland areas, the coast, and offshore marine areas.)
