Question 6 a) A concrete slab is required in the form shown below. This has a length wise axis of symmetry of length 16m. It also has a maximum width axis at right angles to the axis of symmetry of 10m. The lengths of straight lines contained by the shape, parallel to the axis of symmetry and separated by 1.25m intervals, are given for half the area: i) Open with Google Docs i) ii) ii) 0.0 m 10.0 m 10.7 m 14.0 m 15.7 m 16.0 m Estimate the area of half the slab using Simpson’s rule. What is the estimated area of the proposed slab? b) A compressed spring accelerates a ball bearing in a b-b gun the length of the barrel for 0.03 seconds after which the bearing exits the gun. The acceleration in the barrel is given by a = 1000 – 360t, where t is time in seconds and a is the acceleration in ms-². (4 marks) (1 mark) Deduce a formula for its velocity, v, after t seconds while travelling though the gun, and hence determine the velocity with which a ball bearing leaves the muzzle of the gun. (2 marks) Determine the distance in the gun over which the spring propels the ball. (3 marks) (Total 10 marks)
