# No plagiarism #Decide on the type of motherboard to use in the computer system you are designing. Explain what it is and why you chose it.

This from Lab 5.1

  1. Using the information you recorded previously in Step 5,consult Table 5-1 to find out how to enter your system’s setuputility. (Alternatively, when you first turn on your PC, look for amessage on your screen, which might read something like “Press F2to access setup.”

Table 5-1: Methods for entering CMOS setup utilities by BIOS

BIOS

Method for entering CMOS setup utility

AMI BIOS

Boot the computer, and then press the Deletekey.

Award BIOS

Boot the computer, and then press the Deletekey.

Older Phoenix BIOS

Boot the computer, and then press the Ctrl+Alt+Esc orCtrl+Alt+S key combination.

Newer Phoenix BIOS

Boot the computer, and then press the F2 or F1key.

Dell Computers with Phoenix BIOS

Boot the computer, and then press the Ctrl+Alt+Enter keycombination.

Some older Compaq computers, such as Deskpro 286 or386

Plac e the diagnostics disk in thedrive, reboot the system, and choose Computer Setup from themenu.

Some newer Compaq computers, such as Prolinea, Deskpro,DeskproXL, Deskpro LE, or Presario

Boot the computer, wait for two beeps, and when thecursor is in the upper-right corner of the screen, press the F10key.

All other older computers

Use the setup program on the floppy disk that came withthe PC. If the floppy disk is lost, contact the motherboardmanufacturer to get a replacement.

Note

For Compaq computers, the CMOS setup program is stored on thehard drive in a small, non-DOS partition of about 3MB. If thispartition becomes corrupted or the computer is an older model, youmust run setup from a diagnostic disk. If you can’t run setup bypressing F10 at startup, a damaged partition or virus is likelytaking up space in conventional memory.

Now you’re ready to enter the CMOS setup utility included inyour BIOS. Follow these steps:

  1. If a floppy disk is necessary to enter the CMOS setup utility, insert it now.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. When the system restarts, enter the setup utility using thecorrect method for your computer.
  4. Notice that the CMOS utility groups settings by function. Forexample, all the power management features are grouped together ina Power Management section.
  5. The main screen usually has a Help section that describes howto make selections and exit the utility. Typically, you can use thearrow keys or Tab key to highlight options. After you havehighlighted your selection, usually you need to press Enter, PageDown, or the spacebar. The main screen might display a shortsummary of the highlighted category. Look for and select a categorycalled something like Standard CMOS Setup.
  6. In the Standard CMOS Setup screen, you should see some or allof the following settings. List the current setting for each of thefollowing:
    • Date:_______________________________________________________
    • Time:_______________________________________________________
    • For IDE hard drives, a table listing drive size, mode ofoperation, and cylinder, head, and sector information:

_______________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________

  • Floppy drive setup information, including drive letter andtype:

_______________________________________________________

  • Halt on error setup (the type of error that halts the bootprocess):

_______________________________________________________

  • Memory summary (summary of system memory divisions):

_______________________________________________________

  • Boot sequence (drives the BIOS searches for an OS):

_______________________________________________________

  1. Exit the Standard CMOS setup screen and return to the mainpage. Select a section called something like ChipsetFeatures Setup.
  2. Record settings for the following as well as any other settingsin this section:
    • RAM setup options:

_______________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________

  • AGP setup options:

_______________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________

  • CPU-specific setup options:

_______________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________

  • Settings for serial and parallel ports:

_______________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________

  • Provisions for enabling and disabling onboard drive controllersand other embedded devices:

_______________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________

Note

Most of the CMOS settings never need changing, so understandingevery setting isn’t necessary.

  1. Exit to the CMOS setup main screen. Explore the menus andsubmenus of the CMOS setup utility and answer these questions:
    • Does CMOS setup offer the option to set a supervisor password? If so, what’s the name of the screen where the password isset?

_______________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________

  • Does CMOS setup offer the option to set a user password? Is so,what options can affect the way users can access and use CMOSsetup?

  1. Exit to the CMOS setup main screen. You might see options forloading CMOS defaults (which restore factory settings and can behelpful in troubleshooting) as well as options for exiting with orwithout saving changes. There might be an option to set user andsupervisor passwords as well as a utility to detect IDE hard diskdrives automatically.

Now that you’re familiar with the way the CMOS setup utilityworks, you can change the date and time settings. Then you rebootthe computer, confirm that the changes are reflected in theoperating system, and return the CMOS date and time to the correctsettings. Follow these steps:

  1. Return to the Standard CMOS setup screen.
  2. Highlight the time field(s) and set the time ahead onehour.
  3. Move to the date field(s) and set the date ahead one year.
  4. Return to the main CMOS setup screen, and click an option namedsomething like Save Settings andExit. If prompted, verify that you want to save thesettings.
  5. Wait while the system reboots. Allow Windows to load.
  6. At the desktop, check the time and date. Are your CMOS setupchanges reflected in Windows?

_______________________________________________________

  1. Reboot the computer, return to CMOS setup, and set the correcttime and date.

Verify again that the changes are reflected in Windows.

  1. Using Setup Identify:

  • Mainboard manufacturer:
